About Us

The Namibia Rural Women Assembly (NRWA) is a membership-based organization that serves as the voice for rural women across all 14 regions of Namibia. Established in 2010 and formally registered as a trust in 2020, NRWA is a national chapter of the regional Rural Women's Assembly (RWA), a self-organized network of rural women's movements active in ten countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. NRWA currently has a membership of over 5,800 women.

What We Do: Our Goals and Activities

NRWA aims to create a society where rural women are active and autonomous, leading the charge towards sustainable livelihoods and climate justice. Our work is centered on key pillars:

Advocacy and Lobbying

We advocate for policy reforms and better implementation of laws to address the challenges faced by rural women. We have raised concerns on a wide range of issues, including:

  • Land ownership and tenure security.
  • Disparities in maternity leave benefits between the public and private sectors.
  • Gender-based violence (GBV) and discrimination.
  • Teenage pregnancies and child marriages.
  • Food security.
  • Human-wildlife conflict and climate change impacts.

Capacity Building and Empowerment

We empower our members with practical skills and knowledge through various projects and training programs:

  • Feminist Agroecology Schools: These week-long schools equip women with hands-on training in sustainable farming methods like crop diversification, agroforestry, and water harvesting.
  • Skill Development: We offer training in areas such as public speaking, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship to help women assume leadership roles and participate in wider democratic processes.
  • Resource Mobilization: We facilitate access to resources and assistance for our members, such as a donation of seeds for a community gardening project and a 50-hectare land donation for a communal vegetable garden.

Recent Projects and Initiatives (2024-2025)

  • Environmental and Climate Resilience Learning Exchange: In June 2025, NRWA successfully hosted a two-day event in the Erongo Region to exchange knowledge on biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, and human-wildlife coexistence.
  • Namibian Rural Women's Manifesto: A key outcome of a recent Feminist Agroecology School was the collective development of this manifesto, which outlines the demands of rural women for land access, financial inclusion, and leadership representation.
